What is included in this offering?
Income-eligible homeowners may qualify to receive free weatherization improvements and free installation of ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs, programmable or smart thermostats, advanced power strips, faucet aerators, showerheads, pipe insulation and more.
ComEd has partnered with the Chicago Bungalow Association, the Chicagoland Vintage Home Association and Community Action Agencies to help customers take advantage of these energy-saving services.
What type of home styles are considered single-family homes for this offering?
Single-family homes, townhomes and duplexes are considered single-family homes for this offering. ComEd offers similar income eligible energy upgrade offerings for multi-family properties.
Is this offer completely free?
Yes. The energy assessment, weatherization improvements and all energy-saving products installed in your home are included at no cost to you.
What can I expect during my appointments?
An adult over the age of 18 must be home during the assessment appointment and during times when weatherization or installation of products occurs. An energy advisor will perform a walk-through of your home to complete an energy assessment. The advisor will need access to your attic and basement to assess the heating and cooling systems and weatherization opportunities for your home.
Once your application is approved based on the assessment, the weatherization work will be scheduled at a time convenient for you. The offering also includes professional installation of ENERGY STAR® certified LED bulbs, energy-efficient showerheads, faucet aerators, programmable or smart thermostats, and possibly more products, depending on the need in your home. These products may be installed the day of the assessment, or at another time.
Why am I being transferred to the Chicago Bungalow Association or the Chicagoland Vintage Home Association, or being directed to contact a Community Action Agency in my area?
ComEd is partnering with these community-based organizations to help promote and deliver this offering in your community. These organizations can provide further details and discuss the benefits of this energy-saving opportunity with you. They will also help determine your property’s eligibility, process your application, and review the participation process with you.
Do I qualify per the income eligibility requirements?
The community-based organization will help determine you and your home's eligibility, as well as help facilitate the application process.
To qualify for free home energy upgrades, ComEd customers must meet household income at or below 80% Area Median Income (AMI). AMI varies, depending on where you live within the ComEd service territory. The chart below describes the maximum qualifying household income for most of the Chicago metropolitan area:
During the application process, your community-based organization will confirm the AMI maximum qualifying household income for your home’s location.
How can I apply for energy upgrades?
Getting started is simple. Contact a community agency or call ComEd to be directed to the Chicago Bungalow Association or the Chicagoland Vintage Home Association. These organizations will determine if you qualify and help you take your first step to energy savings.
Contact your local Community Agency (CAA) to apply. The CAA representative will discuss your home's needs and your income eligibility in order to process your application. Depending on income guidelines, CAAs can process your application either in partnership with the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP) or a utility-only funded initiative to help you take advantage of these energy-saving services.

Will I be pressured to buy anything?
No. The energy advisor will leave you with information about the free products he or she installed, as well as some tips for how to continue saving energy. You will not be signed up for any other offers or asked to purchase anything. However, if you wish to make further improvements to your home, the energy advisor can give you information on other available rebate offerings and opportunities to help you save money and energy.
Is this an ASHRAE energy audit?
No, this offering provides a free, walk-through assessment of your home’s energy use. Our weatherization services do include blower door testing with combustion safety testing, before and after the weatherization work is completed. An energy audit typically requires an ‘out of pocket’ expense, whereas ComEd’s assessment for energy upgrades is free.
