How does the Go Electric offer work?
After initial eligibility is confirmed, each customer receives an assessment to determine if their home or building is a good fit for electrification and identify energy saving opportunities. Customers receive a report estimating their expected annual energy bill savings.
While upgrades may differ based on home or building type – there are three main components to each project:
Why is this free to the customer?
ComEd offers appliance rebates, product discounts, and incentives that are made available regardless of income eligibility. Save money on your purchase and operating costs while also reducing your energy use.
Discounts through our Residential Heating & Cooling offering range in value depending on the efficiency rating and specific heat pump technology, like air source heat pump, mini-split, and geothermal.
Homeowners and renters may still be eligible to participate and receive free energy services such as free energy assessments, free and discounted energy-saving products, and more through our Home Energy Savings and Multi-Family Energy Savings offerings.
A comprehensive Go Electric assessment takes between 1 to 3 hours.
What happens during the assessment?
First, you'll receive an assessment as a preliminary review of your property and its energy-saving opportunities. If your property is identified as a potential candidate for the Go Electric offering, next you will receive a more comprehensive assessment with diagnostic testing including thermal imaging, blower door testing, and combustion safety testing. The comprehensive assessment will determine which all-electric upgrades including HVAC and other appliances can be converted in your property.
An individual over the age of 18 must be present during the entire appointment.
All pets must be secured prior to the energy advisor's arrival and for the duration of the appointment.
Please make sure that you can provide the energy advisor with access to your HVAC system, water heater, circuit breaker panel, and any rooms containing home appliances. The energy advisor will not be able to complete the assessment if they are not confident they can do so safely or without damaging property.
Who will perform the work?
An Energy Advisor will perform the Go Electric assessment. All energy advisors are ComEd-authorized program implementers.
A qualified Energy Efficiency Service Provider (EESP) will install your all-electric improvements.
Do heat pumps work in extremely cold/sub-zero temperatures?
Heat pump technology has come a long way in the last 10-20 years, and when properly selected and installed, are fully capable of keeping your home or building comfortable even in the coldest parts of winter.
Our professionally trained Energy Advisors will perform custom calculations of your heating and cooling needs to ensure heat pumps provide comfort year-round.
If the power goes out, what happens?
You can rest assured your power is provided by one of the most reliable grids in the nation. ComEd was recently recognized with 2022 ReliabilityOne® Awards for Most Resilient Power Grid in the U.S. and Outstanding Reliability Performances in the Midwest Metropolitan Service Area.
Since we began smart grid investments, ComEd has helped customers across northern Illinois avoid nearly 19 millions outages, saving more than $3 billion in outage-related costs.
Gas is not a guarantee, most fossil fuel systems also require electricity to operate. Even attempting to do so without power can be very unsafe.
Will I still need my gas utility service after my Go Electric project is completed?
