S&C Electric Company has spent more than a century cultivating its heritage of innovation to address challenges facing the world’s power grids and shaping the future of reliable electricity delivery. S&C’s mission is to continually develop new solutions for electricity delivery and foster improved energy efficiency and reliability practices. They started to put this into practice by looking for savings opportunities at their own facility.
The Chicago-based electric equipment manufacturer had noisy, costly compressed air leaks that were eating into their bottom line. To eliminate the noisy nuisance and cut operating costs, the company reached out to a service provider, who recommended the free Comprehensive Compressed Air Study offered by the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program. That’s when the work began.
Within only three days, the service provider completed a compressed air leak survey to help identify just how much compressed air the company was losing. After the survey, a detailed report was provided to S&C—250 air leaks were identified. Since many of the leaks were caused by loose fittings and leaky gaskets, S&C decided to fix them in house, saving even more money.
What started off as a project to address the noisy environment while lowering operating costs turned into an incredible money and energy savings payoff, not to mention a quieter working environment.
S&C received more than $7,000 in incentives from ComEd and is estimated to save $48,750 and 650,000 kWh per year—the equivalent of shutting down a 150 horsepower compressor. This puts the project payback period at only 10 months. The project also improved comfort and safety in the facility while reducing system flow by 690 cubic feet per minute.
