Facility will provide training in several disciplines to ensure employees bring safe, reliable energy to customers
SUGAR GROVE, IL (Aug. 25, 2022) – As ComEd grows its workforce to power a clean energy future, yesterday, the company cut the ribbon on its new Overhead Transmission Training Center in Sugar Grove, IL. The new training center will provide beginner and refresher training for work on overhead transmission lines to more than 120 employees every year to ensure reliable energy to all ComEd customers.
Work on the training center began in 2017. The site is 65 acres with nearly two-thirds being used for training activities. Training at the site will include crane certification, live line training, drone training and tower rescue training.
"Our clean energy transformation requires a highly trained energy workforce that receives continuous training on the latest technology to help our women and men deliver the highest quality of service and top notch reliability to the customers who are counting on us," said Terence R. Donnelly, President and COO of ComEd. "We're excited to continue the tradition of providing on-site, homegrown training with the addition of a third training facility tailored to the needs of our transmission workforce."
The new facility is the third training center that ComEd has built and the first specifically focused on overhead transmission training. The company's other training facilities include the Chicago Training Center in the Bridgeport neighborhood and the Rockford Training Center. Both of those feature classroom and indoor training spaces, outside training yards, and substation and meter training areas.
ComEd recently announced a new hiring campaign to bring in 500 new employees over the next three years to prepare for clean energy growth in northern Illinois. This effort is part of a broader investment to expand apprenticeship pathways and recruit more diverse, local talent to meet future demand and ensure ComEd's workforce reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. ComEd will conduct recruitment on a rolling basis over the next two years, with its next call for overhead helper positions, a gateway to line work, set to post online later this month.
