Chiller equipment to save hospital $120,000 per year in energy costs, equal to reducing one million pounds of carbon emissions
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (April 21, 2022) – ComEd and Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) are commemorating Earth Week (April 18-22) by announcing the completion of an energy efficiency project that will help lower hospital energy costs and improve environmental sustainability for the benefit of NCH's patients, visitors, staff and community.
NCH collaborated with the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program on a chiller plant modernization project that includes the installation of two new chillers with integrated variable speed drives (VSDs) to more efficiently match chilled water production to space cooling needs. The equipment upgrade is expected to save NCH approximately $120,000 a year in energy costs.
"This initiative is an impactful step toward improving comfort for our patients and staff, as well as benefitting the environment," said Rich Casey, NCH's vice president of hospital operations. "The fact that the project generates a significant cost savings is also a welcomed advantage."
"ComEd is proud to support Northwest Community Healthcare in implementing environmentally conscious projects that can save both energy and money," said Erica Borggren, ComEd's vice president of customer solutions. "Thanks to the energy-efficient design, the project is expected to lower NCH's electricity use by more than 1.2 million kilowatt-hours a year. This is the annual equivalent to reducing more than 1 million pounds of carbon emissions that contribute to climate change, removing 105 cars from the road, planting 589 acres of trees, or powering 144 homes."
The ComEd Energy Efficiency Program, which is funded in accordance with state law, offers a range of services to help families and businesses reduce energy use and save money on their electric bills.
