CHICAGO (April 23, 2018) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has presented its highest honor given to organizations for energy efficiency – the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year: Sustained Excellence Award – to ComEd for a sixth year in a row. It is the ninth straight year that EPA has recognized ComEd's energy efficiency program for helping customers save energy and money and supporting the reduction of carbon emissions in its communities.
The Sustained Excellence designation is awarded to companies that demonstrate exceptional leadership year-after-year in the ENERGY STAR program, while remaining committed to environmental protection through superior energy efficiency achievements.
"We work hard and creatively to empower families, individuals, businesses, and nonprofits to take control of their energy use," said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO of ComEd. "When customers save energy, they also save money and have a positive impact on the environment. It's gratifying to have the EPA recognize our efforts yet again."
Since its inception in 2008, ComEd's energy efficiency program has saved residential, commercial, and industrial customers close to $3 billion and 30 million megawatt-hours of electricity – enough to power more than 3 million homes for one year. This is equivalent to eliminating approximately 39 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere or removing approximately 3.7 million cars from the road for one year.
Under the Future Energy Jobs Act enacted in Illinois in 2017, ComEd's will significantly expand its energy efficiency program, increasing funding from $350 million in 2018 to $440 million by 2030.
EPA recognized ComEd for several energy efficiency achievements in 2017 – among them:
ComEd and its Exelon sister companies BGE, Delmarva Power, PECO, and Pepco were honored for their long-term commitment to energy efficiency at the EPA awards ceremony held in the District of Columbia on Friday, April 20.
"The 2018 ENERGY STAR Partners of the Year have demonstrated real leadership, showing how American families and businesses can save energy, save money, and reduce air emissions," said Bill Wehrum, EPA assistant administrator for Air and Radiation.
