ComEd Prepares for Severe Weather Across Northern Illinois

Energy company encourages customers to be safe and report power outages via text or call

CHICAGO (Oct. 1, 2018) – ComEd is closely monitoring and preparing for severe weather starting Tuesday evening that may affect parts of the northern Illinois region it serves. Current forecasts call for heavy rain, hail and wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. ComEd has increased crew staffing and is readying equipment to respond quickly if power outages occur.

"This storm has the potential for heavy winds, hail and rain. ComEd has proactively increased staffing to respond in the event that there are weather-related issues," said Terence R. Donnelly, ComEd president and COO. "We understand the impact a loss of energy can have on our customers. Our goal is to respond quickly and safely to restore service to our customers."

Public safety is paramount during storms, and ComEd encourages people to take the following precautions:

  • If customers encounter a downed power line, they should immediately call ComEd at 1-800-EDISON-1 (1-800-334-7661). Spanish-speaking customers should call 1-800-95-LUCES (1-800-955-8237).
  • Never approach a downed power line. Always assume a power line is energized and extremely dangerous.
  • In the event of an outage, do not approach ComEd crews working to restore power to ask about restoration times. Crews may be working on live electrical equipment and the perimeter of the work zone may be hazardous.
  • Never wade into a flooded basement unless all electricity – such as power that supplies sump pumps or freezers – has been disconnected. Water may be in contact with electrical outlets, appliances, or cords.

ComEd urges customers to contact the company immediately if they experience a power outage. Customers can text OUT to 26633 (COMED) to report an outage and receive restoration information, and can report outages on Twitter @ComEd or on Facebook at Customers can also report outages by calling 1-800 EDISON-1 (1-800-334-7661) or visiting Spanish-speaking customers should call 1-800-95-LUCES (1-800-955-8237).
